WINDOWS 98/2000 COMPUTER PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE A. CLEAN TEMP DIRECTORY B. DISK CLEANUP:
- Right click START button on start bar. Slide up and click EXPLORE once.
- In Explore scroll down and highlight the TEMP folder.
- Click EDIT at top once; get a drop down menu.
- Slide down to SELECT ALL; click once.
- Click FILE at top and get drop down menu.
- Slide down to DELETE and click once.
- SAY YES and/or YES TO ALL. DELETE ALL FILES IN TEMP FOLDER
C. SCANDISK:
- double click MY COMPUTER
- click right mouse button on C: (drive) & get drop down menu
- go to Properties, click once
- click DISK CLEANUP once
- select all files w/checkmark & click OK
- WAIT and let computer do it's thing
- exit from Cybermedia Non-critical File Cleaner
- do once a month
D. DEFRAG: *MAKE SURE ALL PROGRAMS ARE CLOSED & SCREEN SAVER IS OFF*
- double click MY COMPUTER
- click right mouse button on C: (drive) & get drop down menu
- go to Properties, click once
- click TOOLS TAB at top
- click [CHECK NOW] tab once
- click STANDARD once a month; THOROUGH every 3 months
- click Automatically Fix Errors
- click START and wait till finished
- close Scandisk Results Window
- close Scandisk Window
- double click MY COMPUTER
- click right mouse button on C: (drive) & get drop down menu
- go to Properties, click once
- click TOOLS TAB at top
- click DEFRAGMENT NOW once
- WAIT till done (approx. 30 min)
NOTE: disregard message that says "you don't have to defrag at this time" HIT START ANYWAY!
You can click [SHOW DETAILS] to watch defragging of hard drive.
If you do not watch, it is best to turn your monitor off.- DO RIGHT AWAY WITH NEW COMPUTER/THEN DO QUARTERLY.
